Why study French at Dalhousie?

We offer the widest variety of French courses of any university in the region. You'll learn from professors and instructors who come from diverse francophone regions of Canada, Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Within this stimulating learning environment, you'll receive lots of support through our Cercle Francis tutoring resource and have the opportunity to be part of a lively and fun French student society.

What will I learn?

Courses are available for beginners and for those with a background in French who wish to improve or maintain fluency. Our courses cover all aspects of language learning, linguistics and translation, and provide insight into French and Francophone literature from the middle ages to present day, as well as poetry, theatre, contemporary cinema and media culture.
A great benefit of studying French at Dalhousie is what you will hear. Our faculty is made up of native French speakers from places like Cameroon, France, Lebanon, Quebec and Switzerland. As one of the most diverse groups of educators on campus, students learn distinct variations of spoken French and receive a global cultural education.

Careers and future study:

As one of Canada’s two official languages, proficiency in French can open the door to a wide array of professions. Internationally, French is an official working language at the United Nations, UNESCO, NATO, the EU and the International Red Cross. Careers in the might include:

  • civil servant
  • interpreter
  • Import/export broker

Future studies could include programs at the graduate level in French, public administration or business administration.

Students must have completion of secondary school (Grade 12) or equivalent; A minimum overall average of 70% in five academic Grade 12 courses; A final grade of at least 70% in Grade 12 academic English and any other required subject. English language requirement: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - 237 (computer-based) 90 (iBT) and no lower than 20 in each band; International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - 6.5 overall and no lower than 6.0 in each band; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) – 81; Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 61 overall and no lower than 50 in each skill; Cambridge English: Advanced - 180 overall and no lower than 170 in each band.
