Course description

The MSc in Management and Leadership provides a critical analysis of the international context in which managers and leaders work.

You will develop an understanding of the main theories, models, frameworks, and techniques of management and leadership and have the opportunity to explore these within an international framework. You will also develop a critical understanding of the global economic, social and political environments which affect organisational life.

This degree will equip you with the skills to critically evaluate the published literature on management and leadership and to synthesise the range of issues and perspectives which inform research and practice in the field. It will also develop your practical transferable skills including the ability to conduct independent research. You will have the opportunity to develop the expertise and knowledge to manage competently, capably and ethically.

The course has been designed to meet the needs of newly qualified graduates and professionals setting out in their careers as managers and future leaders.

Teaching and learning

A variety of teaching methods are used with the aim of creating a stimulating environment in which you are encouraged to develop your learning skills and to actively participate in the learning process. These include seminars, lectures, group work, case study analysis and guided reading.

Assessment varies from one module to another and ranges between a mixture of coursework and examinations. The course culminates with an 8,000-word dissertation.

Careers and employability

The broad scope of this course opens up a wide range of managerial roles including general management, HRM, marketing and operations. The content is equally suitable to both private and public sector organisations. The international focus will also position you well for a managerial role in a multinational company or overseas subsidiary.

The course will develop your analytical and reasoning skills as well as your interpersonal, team-working and communications skills. All of these are valuable assets for the aspiring manager or leader. In addition, you will gain broader problem solving, presentation and analytical writing skills from the coursework and group projects.
