UMSL Cyber Start Grant for Fall 2020 - Under this scheme, F1 international students who are unable to report to campus this fall due to COVID19 are able to pay a reduced rate of tuition. ? This will only be for the Fall 2020 semester as the students should be on campus in Spring 2021 paying regular rates. ? Any UMSL Global scholarship awarded for Fall 2020 would be deferred until Spring 2021. ? Students must be enrolled in a degree program conducive to online learning.

Campus-based program with field and practicum experiences in high school settings culminating in Missouri teacher certification

Engaging the natural curiosity of students about living things makes an exciting career as a teacher of life sciences. To prepare you would earn a Bachelor of Science in Education with emphasis in biology in cooperation with the Department of Biology in the College of Arts and Sciences or a Bachelor’s degree in Biology with Master's level licensure from the College of Education. The Biology Department facilities include research and teaching laboratories, field studies, greenhouses, and a large array of supporting modern research instrumentation.

The UMSL Biology and/or Unified Science Education program provides a strong knowledge and skills base in biology as well as teaching approaches and internships. Quality area schools and organizations such as the Saint Louis Science Center, Saint Louis Zoo, and the World Aquarium offer excellent opportunities for working with students while preparing to become a professional educator.

Emphasis Areas:

B.S.Ed. candidates must complete 30 to 50 hours of specific subject requirements in one of the following fields: English, French, Spanish, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, or social studies. Additionally, students may complete teacher certification in art or music after completing a BFA.

B.S. Ed. in Secondary Education with Emphasis in Biology

The B.S. Ed. is a professional education degree designed for students who wish to pursue a teaching career in secondary schools. Much of the discipline-specific coursework parallels the B.A. or B.S. degree in the discipline; however, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) requires specific coursework for teacher certification. Therefore, students interested in the B.S. Ed. should contact the advising office (OASIS) 314-516-5937 in the College of Education for discipline-specific requirements. Note: To obtain teaching certification, DESE requires a 3.0 GPA in the discipline and professional education coursework, as well as a 2.75 GPA overall.
