The English major at the University of Pittsburgh reflects the traditional goals of a liberal arts education: to develop a broad critical and historical understanding of influential cultural traditions and to foster a range of reading and writing strategies as well as skills of critical analysis. It prepares students directly for careers in teaching or writing, but the skills and knowledge it imparts are widely useful in numerous business and professional settings.

An English major is highly regarded, for example, as a pre-professional major for further training in law, medicine, or business. The Director of Academic Affairs for the Association of American Medical Colleges has said (1986) that English majors have a higher rate of acceptance at medical schools than students who have majored in the biological and physical sciences. Majors should consult with their departmental advisors to select courses in English and other disciplines that would collectively best serve their post-graduation plans.

Majors must choose a concentration in at least one of the three tracks – Fiction, Poetry, or Nonfiction. In most cases, the student will take other writing courses as well.

Each track consists of three levels of courses. The introductory courses (0500s) offer a broad introduction to the skills required of writers in that area and generally should be taken no later than the second terms of the sophomore year. The intermediate courses (1000s for Fiction, 1200s for Poetry, 1300s for Nonfiction) refine and develop those skills. The senior seminars (1700s) provide a capstone experience for the student writer.

Prospective students who have not earned college credits since graduating from high school with a diploma or GED should consult this section for information on admission to the University of Pittsburgh. For the Pittsburgh campus, a 100 or higher TOEFL composite score with sub scores of 21 or higher is considered competitive, or a 7.0 IELTS with sub scores of 6.0 or higher.
