The Urban Development Program started in 1980 and produced its first graduating class in 1983. It immediately met considerable interest and success, and grew continuously to have between 30 and 60 students enrolled. At the time of its inception, the program was unique in Canada. Befitting the old real estate adage of “l(fā)ocation, location, location” the program has been hosted by Geography, but it is an interdisciplinary program because it draws heavily from disciplines such as economics, business, management and organizational studies, political science, and demography.

The objective of the UDP is to ensure that graduates understand the processes of urban growth and change matched with the analytical skills required to create opportunities and solve problems. It emphasizes the relative importance of the enterprises influencing the urban landscape. Since the program is oriented towards the behaviour of businesses and individuals, the UDP should not be confused with a “planning program”. If students wish to combine knowledge of urban processes with well-developed analytic skills and business acumen, Western’s UDP has and continues to fill this void with considerable success!

Applicants must complete the full International Baccalaureate Diploma including each of the following to be considered for admission: Completion of the entire Diploma including the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay; Passes in a minimum of 6 subjects of which 3 must be at the Higher Level; A minimum grade total of 28 including points awarded for the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge; No mark less than 4 on any individual course; Prerequisites for your program as specified by Western. Other English Language Requirements accepted: Minimum score required on the TOEFL is 550 on the paper based with a 5 on the TWE, and 83 on the internet-based tests with no score below 20; Pearson Test of English Academic: A minimum overall score of 58 is required with no score less than 56; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): A minimum overall score of 80 is required with no score less than 78; International English Language Testing Service (IELTS): a minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no part less than 6.0; CanTEST: A minimum overall score of 4.0 is required with no part less than 4.0; CAEL: A minimum overall score of 60 is required with no part less than 60.
